Featured Case Study

Client: UC San Diego Health - Jacobs Medical Center

Location: La Jolla, CA

Completion Date: 2016

Casgan teamed with Apple and JAMF to create a revolutionary patient experience at the new 245-bed, $950 million medical and surgical specialty center in La Jolla, CA. Their goal was to dramatically improve the healthcare experience by putting everyday environmental control back in the hands of the patient. The result was a seamlessly integrated patient experience system with lighting, shading, and temperature control in every single patient room, all from a single Apple tablet.

Because some patients are unable to get up, let alone go outside, hospitals have been searching for ways to improve the patient experience. According to Christopher Longhurst, M.D., CIO of UC San Diego Heath, nurses were getting over 800 calls per month just to make a temperature change to a patient’s room. “Patients want to be comfortable in their room, and they always call the nurse of facilities to come adjust it” (The Tech Republic). By putting the power of the room in the patient’s hands, patients are now able to control the lights, the shades, the temperature, the bed and the TV without the help from a nurse, freeing up a substantial amount of time for the hospital facilities team.

Along with state-of-the-art patient room control, hospital patients at UCSD Health are also able to access their medical records on the same mobile device. By adding the MyChart Bedside app by Epic, patients are able to see their treatment, their medication schedule, and their lab results as soon as they become available. Additionally, medical records are automatically wiped each time the patient checks out of the hospital, saving UCSD Health approximately 32,000 manual data wipes in just the first year alone.
